The Certified Administrative Professional and Certified Professional Secretary (CPS®) ratings are designed to provide a measure of skills and core competencies for office professionals. CPS and CAP holders earn an average of 7% more per year than office professionals without these certifications, according to the 2005 IAAP Membership Profile. These certifications are achieved through a combination of career experience and/or education and a certification exam that is offered twice a year. The Certified Professional Secretary exam is comprised of the first three sections listed below. It is offered on the first Saturday in May and November at locations throughout the world. The Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) exam includes the CPS exam as well as a fourth module which is offered on the preceding Friday afternoon of the CPS test. Since the first Certified Professional Secretary examination in 1951, over 60,000 have achieved the CPS status.
Attaining the CPS and/or CAP rating is an investment in your career that may allow you to:
You can review the exam content here. The Two Rivers Chapter wants to support you in your quest for professional development. We are taking steps to assist you as you pursue your CAP and CPS certifications. CAP/CPS Study GroupWe have formed a CAP/CPS study group which will work through the study materials together to prepare for the exam. If you are interested in learning more about this tremendous educational opportunity, please contact Patricia Glade at patricia.glade@bp.com. Lending LibraryThe Two Rivers Chapter is also putting together a lending library of materials to be used in preparing for the exam. Members may check out materials for 30 days at a time. Please contact Carol Synal CPS at csynal@packereng.com if you would like to borrow some study material. RecertificationRecertification is required for the CPS and CAP certifications. It takes a combination of education, experience and commitment to make a professional secretary; thus, recertification is a way to validate your professionalism throughout your career. Over a five year period, one must collect 90 points from a combination of areas, including college courses, CEU courses, project management, leadership roles and other areas. In order to assist you in tracking your recertification points, we have put together a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Note: This is an optional program. You do not have to be a member of IAAP in order to take the examination, and you do not have to take the examination in order to belong to IAAP. You also do not have to take the review courses to take the exam (although we strongly recommend them).
